Maui Surf Schools & Politics - "Recreation VS. Regulation"

Maui County is waging a war against all ocean recreation companies!

The Maui County Parks and Recreation Department is threatening to enact a law that would severely limit ocean recreation schools at Maui county beach parks.  This law, MC10-102, would not only limit hours of operation, cap off students/class, but cut out over half of all permitted surf, scuba, kayak, kite and windsurfing schools!  This law threatens the survival of small businesses and employees, who keep our visitors and locals safe as they learn a new water sport!

Maui Surfer Girls is not going down without a fight!  Many of our supporters have written letters to Mayor Tavares in testimony of our program.  And today, my letter to the editor of the Maui News was published.

Check it out:  The Maui News Letter to the Editor - 3/13/08

If you've been touched by our surf camp programming or surf school, we'd appreciate any testimony in our behalf!  Please email the Director of Parks and Recreation, Tamara Horcajo at Tamara.Horcajo@co.maui.hi.us

Much Mahalo for your support!

Snow in Maui?

Hey guess what? There's snow on top of Haleakala today!

Haleakala ironically means house of the sun - but as you can see it's been snowed on. They even closed the highway at the top because of icy conditions.

Grab your boogie boards and lets go sleddin' down the volcano!

Winter "Boot" Camp - 2008

I'm honored to have spent the first week of 2008 - with a group of intelligent, courageous & adventurous, spontaneous dance party surfer girls! Gaby Barsotti, Fanny Poliquin-Bureau, Ashley Russell, and Michaela Steinbeck - you are all amazing young women!

Each day we piled into "Falcor" and hit the northshore waves. Blaring Gaby's ipod from Hanumanu to Lahaina Breakwall - we were rockin it hard - 2 sessions per day! I was so impressed with the girls stamina and eagerness to charge the north shore waves. Granted we had our down time chillin' at our Paia crash pad - playing Crainium & cracking open coconuts with a pick axe. Then there was our afternoon adventure to the new flow master wave pool in Kihei, Da Rush, where we all suffered whiplash from our dramatic wipe outs! Video highlights from our camp will be shortly uploaded -- keep posted!

"...Without self-discovery, a person may still have self confidence, but it is a self confidence built on ignorance and it melts in the face of heavy burdens. Self discovery is the end product of a great challenge mastered, when the mind commands the body to do the seemingly impossible, when courage and strength are summoned to extraordinary limits for the sake of something outside the self--a principle, an onerous task, another human life." --Kurt Hahn

Welcome to the Maui Surfer Girls Blog

Gabby2dustin1_2

Aloha Bloggers of the World!

Because we here at Maui Surfer Girls are bursting from our seams with years of amazing photos, video, and stories, I decided that MSG needs a platform to showcase it all here on this blog.

We are joining the troves of other blogs and social networking sites, but the Maui Surfer Girls are taking them all by the kahoonies!! Who else will show you video of Maui's top waterwomen surfing 30 foot waves at JAWS? We plan to be the hot surfing resource for waterwomen and men from around the globe.

I've gotta be honest, I wear about six hats here at MSG -- as the director of our surf camps, the surf instructor of our surf school, the marketing of all of the above, as well as ding repair extraordinaire, jet ski maintenance mama, video editor, and now blog updater....so please excuse us if the blog isn't updated as up to the minute as it should. If there's a college student out there, who wants to do a work trade on Maui, and help me wear one of these hats...please contact me immediately! :)

ENJOY our new BLOG! And spread the new Maui Surfer Girls blog throughout internet land!

Big Aloha,

Dustin
