Aloha Friday to you all!
I wanted to share this documentary that I put together for an alumni camper, Lila Roo. She attended the first four years of our surf camp and transformed herself into an amazing surfer girl. After reviewing camp video footage, I realized that I captured her incredible surfing progression and decided to sneak around and film her charging Maui's northshore without her knowing. I produced this documentary, "Lila's Extreme Surf Makeover", for her high school graduation present.
I think this documentary speaks volumes about courage and character building. It shows how pushing ones comfort zones in the ocean can make a profound impact on a girls self-esteem during those crucial teenage years. I witnessed Lila progress from barely paddling her surfboard, and her lack of belief in herself and athletic ability, to four years later, charging 6 foot waves on Maui's north shore with an air of new found confidence! This is what the Maui Surfer Girls program aims to accomplish for teen girls who attend our camps.
Here's Lila's incredible extreme surf makeover:
By the way, Lila has now become an accomplished artist, with an art degree from Reed College. Her surf art and photography will be featured in Surfer Magazine soon.Posted at 04:21 PM in Video Clips | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0)
At 5 months old, Luna is already learning her first board sport: skateboarding on my longboard!
I can't wait to get her out at guardrails on my 12' soft top! She'll be a natural after cross training on my longboard through the streets of my neighborhood! You go girl! Check out this video clip from this morning:

Hope you enjoy this video I put together of the 2009 Billabong Pro Trials. It was an exciting year, with the "swell of the century" rumblin' through the islands that week. The waves were pumping 10-12ft for the trials - compared to last years skunk (the finals were actually held at Hookipa in shoulder high windchop)!
Major props to the pro women charging that day, very impressive surfing! I think the video highlights some of their big barrels and powerful snaps.

Here's the first of my little shorts documenting the big swell that hit our islands early last week. As usual the media and surf forecasters hyped the swell as the "swell of the century", saying that the waves would reach well over 50 feet, as big as the last big swell in December 1969. And as usual, the swell hit Oahu much bigger than Maui.
They ended up running the Eddie Aikau contest, which hasn't been run since 2004. It needs at least 40 foot waves to call on the contest.
The day before the Eddie, on Monday, I ended up shooting Jaws in the morning and then driving to Honolua Bay to capture the sunset action of the swell building. Hope you all enjoy the clips! I had fun shooting and editing this footage!

Check out the recent video entry for Billabong XXL awards for 2009. They are calling it one of the heaviest barrels ever ridden by a woman! I think Andrea Moller, also a big wave Brazilian charger, can give her a run for her money at "Jaws" this year too! This ride is very impressive - check it out!

What do you get when you cross tatooed women, roller skates, pads, helmets, wristguards, and pure guts - the Maui Roller Derby Girls! I sat on the sidelines on a cement basketball court turned roller derby track, with my jaw to the ground. I could not believe my eyes - these chics are HARD-CORE!! I thought surfing Jaws was intense, but wiping out on hard pavement beneath a pile up of muscle stacked, padded chics with roller skates on, is another story. Wow, what a sport! Here's how it works:
Two teams bout each other on a race track, the jammer position scores points by passing the pack of blockers and pivots, who's sole purpose is to take out the opponents jammer or support their own jammer in passing up the pack. The blockers and pivots play both offense and defense. It's such an exciting match to watch. The little speed-track has tight turns that set up serious spills with a total of twelve players bunched together skating at high speeds. The jammers go head to head trying to get through the pack of ten blockers and pivots to score points. The lead jammer has the option to call of the bout at any point and the next set of blockers and jammers come on the track for the next bout.
To really hype up and psych out opponents, are the roller derby names the girls choose for themselves. "Killah Kelly" was my old roomate who organized the Maui league. Other names are "Sarassassin", "Lizzy Scissor-Skates", "Slam Musubi", "Bloody Picka", etc.
I had soo much fun filming the bout! Here's the highlights of the "Maui May-Hem: Black Vs. White" bout with the visiting team, Hawaii Pacific Roller Derby girls from Oahu on May 17, 2009!
